Beneath the great wave: Hokusai and Hiroshige
Whitworth Art Gallery- Manchester: 14 March – 15 November 2026

Hokusai was an artist who just got better and better as he aged, he dismissed his work before the age of 70 and believed he would gain true mastery only by the age of 110! He said that art is a gradual understanding of the true nature of an object…. I must admit I feel at the age of 53yrs that I am only just starting to see things through new perspectives with a deeper understanding. If you listen to podcasts follow this link for an enlightening and easy listen. A 2 part series from Stories of Art about Hokusai and his work, with Art Historian Dr James Fox and Art critic Alistair Sooke, let me know what you think.

This exhibition in Manchester (my home town) offers the opportunity to ‘step into Japan’s floating world and explore the art of Hokusai and Hiroshige, two visionary artists whose images have shaped how we see nature, landscape and everyday life’. It is an incredible opportunity to view a collection of rare works brought together and beautifully curated by Manchester Whitworth Gallery. They have a fab cafe too with lovely vegan food.
