Inspired by our trip to see Hokusai and Hiroshige’s work
This summer I’ve been thinking more about the creative process, and how it’s never too late to get started, inspired through learning more about Hokusai and Hiroshige Japanese artists of the late 1700’s and 1800’s. Hokusai had been an artist all his life and at 70 years old wrote that he was yet to become a ‘good’ artist. Apart from developing a deeper understanding of the skills of these print makers, I was also delighted to see the slightly later work of Hiroshige- one of Van Gogh’s favourite artists, and interested to see the introduction of a wider range of colours coming from Europe and techniques becoming more illustrative and livelier. ‘Beneath the Great Wave exhibition is still on at Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery until 15th November.
