My Story

ABOUT MY ART

My paintings focus on the natural environment, drawing inspiration from being immersed in the sensory calm of woodlands and forests, among ferns and undergrowth. I capture aspects of wild landscapes and the seasonal changes. I recognise how art and nature promote wellbeing, keeping us rooted in the here and now where we can find endless immersive, mindful meditations. My choice of subject matter is personal, I paint or create a subject that connects with me, a colour, a twist or a curl of a leaf that captures my interest or evokes a feeling that needs to be captured, the early morning low-lying mist across the valley floor, or the late summer afternoon glow settling in the woods.
ABOUT ME

I established myself as a self-employed artist and painter in the 1990’s where my time behind the scenes in local theatres moved me towards work on productions at the BBC, Granada Television and Yorkshire TV.

MY BACKGROUND

I painted murals for shopping centres at Meadowhall in Sheffield, and The Trafford Centre in Greater Manchester.

I worked my apprenticeship alongside traditional scenic artist Trevor Jones for many years who gave me the confidence to take on large scale projects. Recent scenery painting for theatres includes work for the Buxton Opera House in Derbyshire, as well as specialist paint effects for a set at the English touring theatre in Vienna.

I combine much of what I have learnt over the last 30 years with what I love to do: painting from nature to capture the infinite beauty that nature presents us with every day and sharing with others the benefits of art to our wellbeing.

My Style

NOT JUST ART

My style is varied from detailed studies of a particular species of fern through to abstract expressionist representations that capture a mood, a feeling or a concept. Original art is a timeless record of a moment in time, it embodies a piece of the artist’s creativity, imagination and emotion, the art holds a heartfelt experience. The tactile elements of an original painting create a sense of connection with the artist’s process and offer a rich sensory and emotional experience. This collaboration with or connection between art, nature and wellbeing motivated me to study Art Psychotherapy at Masters level. I try to share what I have discovered with others whenever I can. Alongside my own practice as an artist, I run workshops and art groups and offer art therapy and mentoring services for schools, young people and adults. I am a HCPC registered Art Psychotherapist and a member of the British Association of Art Therapists.

“Supporting others to engage with the creative process, to share what I myself have discovered through my own art and promote a greater sense of self and wellbeing feels like the right thing to do…..”
